Environmental Policy Statement
My Garden Paradise is a small, independent garden design studio run by Gail Robinson. My work is rooted in horticulture, permaculture and naturalistic planting, with a strong focus on creating wildlife-friendly, biodiverse gardens that feel calm, generous and connected to nature.
Caring for the environment is not an add-on to my work, it sits at the heart of how I design gardens and how I run my business.
How I work
I aim to reduce environmental impact wherever realistically possible, particularly through thoughtful design choices, sensible use of resources and encouraging long-lasting, resilient gardens rather than short-term fixes.
In practice, this means I try to:
Design gardens that work with nature, not against it; improving soil health, supporting wildlife, and making the most of existing site conditions such as aspect, drainage and existing planting.
Prioritise biodiversity and wildlife-friendly planting, using a wide range of plants, favouring resilient, nectar-rich species and encouraging naturalistic, layered planting schemes.
Promote peat-free composts, composting, and low-intervention gardening, while minimising the use of herbicides wherever possible. I never promote or advocate the use of pesticides.
Reduce waste through design, by re-using existing materials on site wherever they can be lifted and re-purposed, and by designing carefully to avoid unnecessary removal, over-ordering or disposal of materials.
Encourage low-impact materials, durability and longevity over trend-driven features that may need replacing in a few years.
Take a realistic approach to energy use, favouring low-energy LED lighting where garden lighting is required, and avoiding technologies that are unlikely to work well in local conditions.
Support local growers, nurseries and responsible suppliers wherever possible, while recognising that clients usually choose and appoint their own contractors.
Plan travel sensibly, grouping site visits where I can and working locally as much as possible to reduce unnecessary mileage.
Share knowledge and encourage good practice, through client conversations, garden advice, talks and writing, helping people feel more confident about gardening in ways that support nature.
An honest, evolving approach
As a small business, I focus on doing what is practical, meaningful and achievable, rather than making promises that don’t reflect reality. This policy will continue to evolve as my work develops, my understanding deepens and better options become available.
Ultimately, my aim is simple:
to design gardens that are beautiful, resilient, kind to wildlife, and a genuine positive presence for the people who live with them and the wider environment.
